One of the great Canadian accounting technology success stories has been Accpac. But a lot has changed with ‘Accpac' since the mid-1970's. The company is now focusing its business on the customer experience and a handful of attributes like simplicity, agility and innovation. This has already begun to pay off, as their products continue to be recognized as the market leaders in Canada and their customer call center has been recognized as the best in the Americas. Before we look at the new Accpac, let's go back into its history.

Accpac's origins go back over 30 years, beginning in 1976, when the company was then known as the Basic Software Group. I thought it would be interesting to look back at those years and then to look ahead to where the new Accpac is trying to go.

The product was founded in Vancouver by Don Thomson, Ted Comfoltey, Keith Wales and Norm Francis. The company quickly gained recognition for its EasyWriter word processing program, then, in 197, for its MS DOS based accounting software products. These were marketed first as EasyBusiness Systems in Canada and then eventually in the United States from the early through mid 1980's.

In the 80s it became the mid market accounting solution of choice in Canada. One of the brilliant marketing moves made by the founders of ACCPAC was to build a strong relationship with public accounting firms in Canada. These firms recommended ACCPAC and provided installation, training and support services.
